SAD CONDITION OF THE RUSSIAN PEASANTRY.
Famine is steadily doing its gruesome work in Russia just now (writ's a correspondent of the Daily Telegraph.) The peasants are suffering unhpard of misery, which the Government seems far more concerned to hide than to relieve. Hundreds—ay, thousands—have died of hunger during the -past six weeks, and large numbers are being carried off every day. Frequent explosions of popular indignation, which, during the past few weeks has been constantly di>tm tiing the peace of tho South, leavo uo doubt in the miuds of the authorities that Oriental fatalism is fast losing its hold on the Little Russians. Of course, the-e risings are finally, though never very speedily, stamped ont, and the last state of the unfortunate peasants is infinitely worse than tho first; but, on tho other hand, their example is contagious, and the authorities are growing alarmed. Thus, in the district of Zvenigorodka (Government of Kieff), tho peasants of Iskrina took forcible possession of the cattle of certain rich landowners, set fire to their com, and in other ways did tbem enormous damage. The local authorities were sent for, and appeared on tho scene with all the paraphernalia of office, hut, after a bloody skirmish, were driven back by tho peasants. A detachment of troops was sent for, but the number available was probably insufficient, for they took two days to pacify the district. Iu the village of Olkhovtsa a much more serious rising took place, for tho peasants were all armed with scythes, hatchets, &c., and the representatives of law and order suffered considerably at their hands. Several persons were severely wounded, among others the local chiefs of police.
