CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The above Council met on Tuesday, at 3 p.m., in the Council Chambers. Present: The Mayor (Mr James Hnlly) and Crs. J. H. Priestly, J. Webber, J. R. S. Richardsou, A. Bach, J. Ferguson, J. S. Bond and D. Richardson. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the correspondence was taken. Surfaceman.—Mr Bowloy tendered for the office of surfaceman. —The Mayor said ho found the letter in his private box when he returned from the last Council meeting, consequently it was too late to be entertained. Subsidy.-— A notice was received that the balance of the Government subsidy —about £10—had been placed to the credit of the Council at the bank. Balance-sheet,—The Secretary of the Treasury Department wrote, acknowledging the receipt of two copies of the Borough balance-sheet, and requesting that another be forwarded, as three were required.—The request had been complied with. Trees in Government Paddock,—The report of the Works Committee was read, which, among other things, suggested that trees be planted in the Government paddock in places where some had died out.— Cr. Webber said Mr John . Sharp would find and plant the trees at Is each, He further thought it advisable to plant a few willows, which would provide shade for spectators at the various sports. Cr. Bond had kindly offered to give these, so the Council would only have to pay for the planting of them.—Referred to Crs. Webber and Bond, with power to act. Overdraft.—The state of the overdraft at the Bank at date was £'031 3a sd, being about £100 within the limit. Town Allotments.—lt was decided to lease the town allotments that remain unoccupied for a term of 21 years, and to excise clauses IT and I that refer to buildings being erected and compensation for same from the leases, the Mayor and Cr. Priestly to substitute one in lieu thereof, if considered necessary. Absentees' Acres.—On the motion of Cr. D. Richardson, seconded by Cr. Bach, it was decided to take steps to sell the acres belonging to absentees, upon which rates have not been paid for a considerable time. —The Mayor said the expense would not be so great as had been anticipated. There were 21 acres, and the first costs would be £S 10s, and probably a similar amount in six months' time. Slaughter Yards.—The Mayor drew the attention of the Council to the fact that Mr John Arnold had not taken out a slaughtering license, and said a penalty of £10 for each head of cattle slaughtered could be enforced. A long and animated discussion ensued, Crs. D. Richardson and Bach contending that it was unfair to make Mr Arnold pay.when the McCanns', who were to all intents butchers, went free. It was eventually resolved to get a copy of the new Licensing Act before taking proceedings. Retiring Members. — Crs. Gillett, Webber and D. Richardson are the members who retire by rotation, and are eligible for re-election. Public Hall Floor,—The following tenders were received for laying a ne\v kauri floor in the Public Hall, with the priees for extra joists and blocks, respectively, if found necessary :—H. Carter, £20 18s, joists 4s 9d each ;C. Potterto-,*, £2117s fid, 4s 3d, lOd ; P. Murphy, £2G 12s Od, ss, 2a Od ; W. White, £24 10s, 4s, Is 3d ; MeFarlane and Miller, £30 10s, 4s Gd, IsOd; W. Morse, £25- 15s, 3s Od, Is 9d ; W. J. Young, £25 las, 4s, Is Gd ; J. Arraer, £18 12s, joists, lis per hundred feet, blocks, 2s. On the motion of Cr Fergusson, Potterton'B tender was accepted, as it was considered Armer must have made an error in his calculations. At this point the Council went into committee to discuss some question, and the members of the press were requested to retire. .
