Lord George Hamilton made ft capital point in his reply on our national defences when he showed what the landing of 100,000 hostile solders on our shores means in shipping transport. It is obvious that to make the invasion effective this number of men would require to be landed almost simultaneously. To laud them within 48 hours would require 120 steamers, each of 4000 tons, or a total tonnage of 480,000 tons. Only two Powers have the men to form this invading force for a sudden effort. But Germany, if she had all her available steam tonnage mustered for a descent on our shores, would fall short *f the accommodation necessary by 60,000 tons, and France could only at tho best muster 20,000 tons in excess of accommodation :—Leeds Mercury. A foreign drummer from New York took the elevator to the fifth storey of a Dulnth wholesale house and walked into the office where one of the proprietors was busy at his desk. The drummer was informed that the house needed nothing in his line, but he persisted in opening his sample bag and making himself the cause of much distress, when, finally, the enraged proprietor kicked him down the first flight of stairs. An employe, observing his mode of descent, repeated the dose with like cffcct, and it was dittoed till the drummer found himself on the curbstone and unupholstered highway. Shaking himself, he looked back over the course of events and ejaculated, " Veil, dot- ish a great establishment. I don't know dere berticular line of pishness, but mine gootness, what system ! "
