PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usn.il monthly meeting of this council wa* held at the Phoenix Hotel, Morrinsviile, at 11 o'clock yesterday. Present: Crs. Chepmell, (chairman), Brunakill, Murphy, Williams, Gould and Browning. Mr Pavitt, county engineer, was also in attendance. The minutes of the special and last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was adopted. Special Order. —The Chairman moved that the Special Order passed at the special meeting held on the 13th July re that portion of the Cambridge-Oxford road in the Taotaoroa riding be confirmed. —Seconded by Cr. Gould and carried. Restoration —Mr Dibble sent in his resignation as a memher of the Council, as he was about to leave the district. The resignation was accepted with regret. Waiorongomai Pont.—-The Clerk read a tender for the punt from Wm. Fielder, which arrived too late fur last meeting.—Mr D. Murphy wrote that as Messis Lloyd and Irwin had not commenced to work the punt owing to some mistake in the lease, he had made arrangements to work the punt up till this meeting, as it would be a great inconvenience to settlers if they had no means of crossing the river. James Stewart having heard that Messrs Lloyd and Irwin did not intend to take over the working of the punt, offered to work it according to the schedule of charges issued by the council, and a subsidy of 2e per day, such subsidy to continue only until such timo as the traffic increases, so that the punt will pay small wages. Messrs Lloyd and Irwin wrote, stating that they would not sign the agreement of lease unless certain concessions were made by the Council. On the Council deciding not to make tiie concessions, and agreeing that Messrs Lloyd t and Irwin's tender had lapsed by their not starting to work the punt on the Ist of August, Cr. Williams moved that James Stewart's tender be accepted.—Seconded by Cr. Browning, and carried.—Cr. Murphy baing interested in this question did not vote. Hot Springs Road. —Mr A. Isaacs wrote, stating that he had seen Mr S. P. Smith, Assistant Surveyor-General, who had {promised to survey road to the Hot Springs from the Te Aroha-Lichfield road, now being made, at the expense of the Survey Department, as soon as the Conncil would make the necessary application. The clerk was instructed, a3 soon as Mr Isaacs deposited £15 with the Council towards defraying the cost of laying out this road, to make on behalf of the Council the necessary application to have a Governor's warrant issund to Mr T. G. Sandes to lay out the road. OitAK.i Biuiigk.—Mr F. D. Rich wrote, requesting the Council to consider the proposition made at a previous meeting by Cr. Williams to refund to the New Zealand Thames Valley Land Company .£3O, half the amount incurred by them in building a bridge over the Oraka Creek, and constructing culverts, &c., on the Oxford-Lichfield road.—Cr. Williams gave notice to move at next meeting that £30, haif the sum expended by tho Thames Valley Land Company on the Putaruru-Oxford road be refunded to the company. Dairies. —A letter was received from the Crown Lands Department, stating that the Government l:» 1 availed themselves temporarily of the services of Mr R. McCallum as a dairy expert to visit the different dairy factories, also to hold meetings of farmers and dairymen in tho country districts, for the purpose of addressing and instructing them on all mattsrs appertaining to the starting and working of dairy factories, the making of butter and cheese, and generally to report on the subject, and asking the Council to co-operate with Mr McCallum, and favour the department with any suggestions they may consider desirable. Waiorongomai.—Mr D. M. L. Wallace complained of the bad state of the road from Mr Rnffey's bakery to the battery, and asked that something be done at once. —The Engineer reported that the county road from the Te Aroha town boundary to Waiorongomai was in a bad state, and that snmo of the culverts were rotting away.— The Engineer was authorised to get the necessary work done on the road ; also to repair the road as requested by Mr Wallace. Lower Hill Track.—Mr J. H. Emmett applied to the Conncil to give him a refund of £4 4s, which he hnd e?<pended on repairs en the Lower Hill Track, and stated that if the Council made the refund he would keep the track in repair during the term of his contract.—lt was resolved that £4 4s bo voted to Mr Emmett to keep the track in repair for six months next ensuing. Roll.—Several applications for alteration on the roll were applied for, and the Clerk was instructed to take the necessary

Boundary.—As the Engineer reported that several claims had been pegged out close to the County boundary, which was not clearly defined, he was instructed to prepare a map, defining the boundary of the Cnunty. Finance. —The Chairman and Crs. Gould and Browning were appointed a committee to examine into the financial position of the County, and report at next meeting. Cemetert.—The Chairman was appointed to confer with Mr Mark Harrison with reference to a site for a cemetery in Morrinsville. Traction Engines. — Thn Chairman drew the attention of the Council to the damage done to the roads by traction engines, and he thought some steps should be taken to regulate the traffic of these machines. —Cr. Williams moved that the chairman confer with the chairman of the Waipa and Waikato Counties, as to the advisability of framing by-laws for the regulation of the traffic of these engines.— Seconded by Cr. Brunskill and carried. Upper Hill Track.—The contractor for this job, not having finished his contract within the specified time, the engineer was instructed to complete the work at the contractor's expense. Mektings.— It was decided to hold the meetings in future on every fourth Thurs day, commencing from Thursday, September 13th. Payments.— The following accounts were passed for payment.—F. I). Rich, £108; J. S. Bond, £1 3s (id; The Waikato Timks, £3 lb's ; C. M. Brunskill, £3 3s; salaries travelling expenses, £14 13s 9d; C. Murphy, £2 KJs ; D. Murphy, £1 19s ; C. Gorman, £4 4s ; K. P. Hodge, £4 4s; P. Thompson, £7 4s: J. Orr, £3 15s; F. Pavitt, £8 7s ; Ei. Michael, £1 5s ; D. Craig, £10 ; B. Montague, £20 ; V. Wallace, £1 3« 3d ; C. Gould, £3 18. Total, £205 3s od. The clerk was authorised to pay the ainounts due to the contractors on the Te Aroha-Lichfield road on Mr Sandes' certificate. This concluded the business and the Council rose.
