NEW GOLDFIELD.

(by tklkguaph—press association*.) Wellington, l'Yiday. Mk Gordon , , Inspecting-Engineer of the Miuiiift Department, has forwarded his report to the Minister of Mines on the Mahakipawa goldfield. After describing its discovery he goes on to say :— "I think it probable that rich quartz reefs will be found at, or near, the head or siiuth-western branch as the creeks get worked up. The whole of the bed rock in this district resembles Otago schists in the vicinity of Scuppers and Slmtover Minus. The total number of men on the field at the time of my visit was about !iOO, of whom 00 have claims in which payable prospects h:\U been obtained. The present extent of the known auriferous country will not admit of a large population, as the ground that is considered likely to be payable is about wholly taken up already, so that new-comers must be prepared to go prospecting. The sideling of the range is very steep, and in many places nothing but bare rucks shows on surface, so that there is not much dependence to be placed in finding a largo amount of reefs. From the present prospects it is likely to last for about two years. There are good indications that Hiiriferious quartz lodes will yet be fnund in this neighbomhood, but it is extremely rough country to prospect.
