WAIKATO DISTRICT HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Borough Council Chambers at 11 o'clock yesteiday. There were present : Messrs Graham (chairman), Primrose, McDonald, Ridler, Brunskill, Hally, Chepmell and Hunter. The minutes of tho preceding meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and adopted. Rkfugk.— Information was received from the Public Works Department that a sum of £100 for an Old Men's Refuge, on the £ for £ system, would be placed on the Public Works estimates. Mrs Bkaksley.—A letter was received from the chairman of the Te Awamutu Town Board with reference to the admission of Mrs Bearsley into tho Hospital, and the Secretary reported that Mrs Bearsley had now been admitted to the Hospital. Cowan's Case.—ln reply to the application for payment of Hospital fees for treatment of his son in the Auckland Hospital, a notice was received from the Official Assignee that Cowan had filed his schedule Julia O'Donoghue.—Mr M. O'Donoghue, of Wuitoa, wrote he was not ablo to comply with the resolution of the Board "f June last, to take his sister out of the Hospital, as he would not be able to give her any assistance, having to move about all over the country looking for work, and has a wife and two children to provide for. He said that he hoped that the Board would reconsider their decision and not incur unnecessary expense by taking legal proceedings against him as at present he has nothing to ljse. As regards his previous agreement with the Board he promised if he was ever in a position he would pay towards his sister's expenses. The Clerk reported that the woman had three single brothers, one of whom was at present head master at the public school at Tuakau. Mr McDonald moved that the secretary bo instructed to endeavour to board Miss O'Donoghue in the town, and that he write to Mr Dennis O'Donoghue of Tuakau, forwarding the account for her maintenance in the Hospital up to the present time, at the same time explaining the arrangements made for her relief by the Charitable Aid Board, and the Secretary failing to board her out, that she be sent to her brother at once.—Seconded by Mr Primrose and carried. Aiimsthong.— A letter was received from W. Armstrong, stating that he was not able to pay at present tho Hospital fees for his son's treatment, as he was only a labouring man, earning daily wages, with seven of a family and this boy on crutchcs to provide for, but would pay as soon as he was able. —The Secretary reported that judgment had been obtained against Annstrong for £2G.—This matter was deferred till next meeting, Mr McDonald to make enquiries in the meantime. KII.KOVI.K. — The Inspector of Police, Tauranga, wrote that enquiries with reference to James Kilfoyle by the New South Wales police had been fruitless. Relief.—The Secretary of the Auckland Charitable Aid Board, wrote, informing the Board that Ralph Ninckey, from Waikato, had arrived in Auckland on June Gth, with a wife and seven children, four of whom are under 11 years of age, all in destitute circumstances, and that the Auckland Board had to grant them relief, which would have to be charged against the Waikato Board.—Mr McDonald moved that the secretary be instructed to enquire on what evidence relief had been granted by the Auckland Board to Ninckey, as ho was known to this Board to be an able-bodied man, and not a fit subject for relief. — Seconded by Mr Chepmell and carried. Subsidy.—The Secretary reported that £479 Is lid subsidy has been paid into the credit of tho Board since last meeting. Cockhf.ai).—Dr. Kenny reported that he had examined Cockhead and found that ho is suffering from an infectious skin disease, and that he was not a case for admission into the Hospital, but that he could be treated at homo if sufficient nourishment be provided him. He n commended that charitable aid be gi.\en in the shape of nourishment. On the receipt of the Doctor's report tho Chairman ordered the snm of 5s per week to be given under the direction of the doctor. The action of tho Chairman was upheld. Fitzpatrick.— Constable White wrote stating that Mrs Mcßirnie would clothe and keep Mrs Fitzpatrick's child for seven shillings per week.—Mr McDonald moved that the offer of Mrs Mcßirnie be accepted. —Seconded by Mr Brunskill and carried. Industrial School.— Mr S. 0. Griffiths wrote, asking that Ethel Houghton, aged 13 years, be committed to an Industrial Home. —It was resolved that no action be taken in this case until information as requested from Mr Griffiths by Mr Hally be supplied.—Mr McDonald moved that enquiries be made from the trustees of the Costley instution, as to the annual cost for boarding children committed to industrial schools.—Seconded by Mr Brunskill, and carried. Secretary's Retort.—The Secretary's report showed a credit balance of £2,70315s 3d and also stated that " Ventilators have been fixed in all the wards at a cost of £2 lO.i ; and tho space under tho verandah has been weatherboarded at a cost of £2 8s Gd. A culvert has also been put in at the lower entrEnce gate at a cost of £2 Gs. Plans and specifications havo been prepared by Mr Richardson for the proposed addittions to the Hospital, which will be submitted for the consideration of the Board. The windmill, which had not been Viorking satisfactorily, owing to defective Connecting gear, was fitted with new levers oifl Saturday last, and up to the present is working well.—The report was adopted. Payments.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—Salaries, £46 4s 8d ; Knox, £14 17s lOd ; Hayes, £4 1-ls 3d ; McDonald, £110s ; Pearson £1 10s ; Gerrand, £5 4r ; Friar and Davis, £3 ; Shaw and Co. £8 2s 4d ; Elliott, £2 7s Gd ; Maunder, £313s ; P' Munro, £2 10s (id ; Tebbs, £2 18s Id ; Dellicar, £1 lis ; Kohimarainara School, £10 10s: St. Mary's School, £9 ; Tucker, £1 15s ; Qualthrough, £2 3s lid; Charitable Aid, £3 2s fid; Kelly, 15s Gd ; The Waikato Times, £2 2s. Plans fob New Hospital, &c.—Plans were laid on the table by Mr D. Richardson for an Hospital, Old Men's Refuge and Fever Hospital, leaving the present hospital as it stands. The hospital will consist of two wards with eight beds in each, and necesjary offices and bathroom, operating room, dispensing room, and a nurses' kitchen. The Old Mens' Refuge will contain six bedrooms with two beds in each room, a living room, kitchen and lavatory; and the fever hospital will consist of two iprds, three beds in each, with a curses'
mom.—Mr McDonald moved that tenders bo called for the erection of the Hospital, Old Men's Refuge and fever ward, the tenders to 'oe opened at next meeting.— Seconded by Mr Hunter and carried. Kkmkk.—Tho usual relief was authorised for the next month, including 5a per week to Gockhead. Mkktikcs.— Mr Brunskill, with the consent of the Board, withdrew his motion for altering the day of meetings. This being all the business, the Board rose.
