A HAN named John Gough was killed by a fall of earth at the tunnel at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday morning. It appears that Gough was employed by a Mr Smith, who has the contract for bricking the tunnel, and while at work about ten tons of enrth fell from the roof of the tunnel, burying deceased and a boy named Smith. The boy when extricated was found to have sustained some bruises and cuts about the head, besides an injury to one of his arms. About 10 o'clock U<mgh was dug out. Death must havo been instantaneous. Deceased was about 55 years of age, and married. His wife and family are residing in Sydney. He had recently insured his life in one of the Life Insurance Companies, supposed to be the A.M.P. Mr Adams, one of the overseers of the work, left Porn- -torau as soon as tha body was recovered, and reached Te Kuiti about dark, when he reported the matter to Constable lVtrrimm who immediately started for Te Awamutu for the coroner (Mr Greshum) who was, however,

absent in Auckland. Tho Constable telegraphed to him, receiving a reply next morning to the effect that business engagements prevented him returning in time to hold m inquest. The Constable then went in search of a J.P. A waggon with the injured boy left the tunnel on Sunday morning for Te Awamutu, when Br. Pairman's services were called in. Gough is an old Auckland resident, he having lived there for many years.
