Both parties have sent to chiefs of other tribes for reinforcements. In the recent engagement, three men were killed and four wounded. Further collision is feared. The Native Minister has ordered nn inquest on the bodies of the kiilml, in order to assort the law, ami telegraphed to Tiiurau that strife must oo.ise, and all grievances ho settled according to law. The Government have not yet decided what action to take against the disturbers. Wellington, Monday. The Commissioner of the Police line received a telegram from Inspector MeGovern, stating that there is no fear of further fighting. Tauru promised he would do nothing if the survey was not interfered with, and was told whether it was impeded or not he must take no action under pain of being held responsible. Ho then said he would keep qniot unless attacked in his pah. Two of the dead have been buried, and two of the wounded are not expected to recover. The Government have taken no steps in the matter so far, though probably the case will be treated as manslaughter. The Under-Secretary, Native Department, has received a telegram from Mr Clendon, It. M. to-day, re the native disturbance at Whangarei, to the effect that the trouble arose out of a dispute as to gum royalty. One of the parties was desirous of putting the land through the Native Land Court, and the other opposed the idea. They then agreed to fight the quarrel out, and matters came to a climax on Thursday last.
