The election for the Isle of Thanet seat in the House of Commons, vacant by the death of the Eight Hon. Colonel King-Harman, resulted in the return of the Right Hon. James Lowther, formerly Chief Secretary of Ireland, in Lord Beaconsfield's administration in 1880. Mr Lowther secured 3517 votes, and his opponent, Mr Knatchbullllugessen, a Gladstonite, 288'J voles.
Importers of kauri timber are realising their stocks, fearing a further decline in consequence of anticipated heavy shipments from New Zealand. July 1.
