RETRENCHMENT.

A JIEKTISR was held in the Public Hall, Cambridge, on Monday evening to consider the question of retrenchment. The Mayor (Mr Hally), presided over an attendance of about 150. Mr K. Dyor moved the following resolution :—" That whilst this meeting leeognises gratefully tho retrenchment already effected in the public expenditure, it is of opinion that the whole machinery of (Government has vastly outgrown the necessities and financial ability of the colony, and that much greater simplification is necessary to secure that economy which the circumstances of the colony re''Voconded by Mr D. Richardson and carried. „ Mr <G. \V. Resell moved:—"Th.it this meeting would suggest in furtherance of tlio first resolution retrenchment in the following directions:— 1. (Greater simplicity in the conduct of tho Legislature, inclu.ling abolition of Hainard. 2. Tho colonisation of all public endowments for educational purposes. 3. Reduction of the capitation pr.int for priiiruy education to £3 10s per head ; towns having a population of mure than say 2000 being required to erect and maintain their own school buildings ; and a portion of the cost of all buildings being requii.id to bo paid by the local bodies. 4. Abolition of all subsidies to local bodies, 5. Amalgamation of public offices, (i. Curtailment (if railway services "n unreproQnctive lines or sections. Mr Russell spoke at great length. Archdeacon Willis and Messrs T. W. Hicks and Jas. Forrest also spoke in support of the motion, which was seconded by Caiit. Souter and carried unanimously. Mr T. Wells moved :—" That the time haa now arrived when the colony should terminate its borrowing policy, and that its revenues should in future be so economised that all further necessary public works may be paid for out of ordinary revenue." Seconded by Mr Hitcluiian, and carried. Mr Wells then moved that copies of tho resolutions be sent to the Premier, also to the members for Waikato and Waipa, and to the Auckland Reform Association. Carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business.
