WAIKATO HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

_♦ Thk usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the Borough Council Chambers, Hamilton, at 11 o'clock yesterdav. The following members were present: Messrs Primrose, McDonald, Seddon, Ridler, Brunskill, Hally, Chepmell and Hunter. An apology was read from the Chairman. Mr W. A. Graham, who was unable to attend this meeting. Mr Hally proposed that Mr Primrose take the chair. Seconded by Mr McDonald, and carried unanimously. The outward correspondence was read and adopted. Award.—ln accordance with a request from this Board, Mr Hay forwarded Mr Cotter's opinion regarding the validity of the award made by the Auditor-General, and which confirmed the opinion given by Mr Hay, that this Board were right in resisting the payment of the award, and would bo wrong to pay the claim without testing the case in Court.

McGarhy.— Mr W. L. C. Williams, on behalf of Mr McGarry, whom he represented as being badly off, applied that the hospital charges for attending Mrs McGarry be made as light as possible.—Mr Hally said ho thought that McGarry was comparatively well off, and it was resolved that he be charged the full amount, to be paid in instalments.

Cowan.—The House Steward to the Auckland Hospital wrote, stating with regard to chis claim that 4s per day was the usual charge for patients who come from other districts, but when the account for 3s per day was rendered to Cowan it was thought he belonged to the Auckland District,—Mr Hally moved that the full amount at 4s per day be paid.—Seconded by Mr Chepmell, and carried. Contribution.—£2oo was received from the Wai pa County Council on behalf of their contribution for the current year.

Endowments. —A circular was received from the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, asking this board to cooperate with them to bring the following resolution which was passed by them, before the House at once. Resolution, "That the Southland Hospitals and Charitable Aid Board having been advised by the Minister of Lands that it is not the intention of the Government to set aside endowments of land for the benefit of Hospitals and Charitable Institutions, this Board desires the co operation of the several Boards of the colony to bring pressure to bear on the Government to ensure the carrying out of the provisions of Clause 88, of tlie Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act, ISSS, the Board being of opinion that the intention of the original Act should be carried nut inasmuch as there is every probability that subsidies will not be continued beyond the time stated in the Amendment Act of 18S(i."—Mr McDonald moved that this resolution be adopted, and that a copy of it be sent to the members for the district, asking them to press the matter in the House. —Seconded '.iy Mr Hally and carried, iN'cutiAiiLK.—Mr McDonald moved that Mr M. O'Donojrhue be at once requested to remove his sister, Julia O'Douoghue, from the Hospital, in accordance with his agreement.—Seconded by Mr Seddon and carried.

JJkghino.— Mr O. F. Chairman of the Ngai-uawaliia Tjwn Bard, drew the attention of the Board to Elizabeth Fitzpatiicik, who had an illegitimate child one year and nin: months old, and was uniblo to provide for her, she having gone to Capt. Jackson, K.M., asking for alms. Mi- Dickoson suggested that the child be handed over to some competent person to look aftfr, and enclosed a certificate from Dr. Murch, advising some such course.—The Secretary was instructed to make inquiries with regard to having the child boarded out, and to communicate with the police at Ngiiruawahia in order to find out the paternity of the child. Increased Duties.—Mr John Knox as coi tv-ctor for supplies to the host l'.al applied to he allowed to charge the increased tariff on the following articles :—tea, 2d per lb ; pepper, 4d pnr lb ; mustard, Id per lb; candles, 2d per lb. —Mr McDonald moved that this reasonable request bo acceded to. —Seconded by Mr Hunter, but on being put to the meeting the motion was lost by five to three.

Hunt.—Dr. Cushnev, lessee of lot 24 Hospital reserve, Cambridge, applied that the rent £11 for this allotment bo reduced. The Secretary was instructed to look into this matter and see if tbare was any lease and ivp'irt at next meeting. Chairman's Uri'okt.—The Chairman read the following monthly report: (Geutlsmen,—Since the last meeting of the Board the state of tho Hospital is as follows :—Remained from last month, 8 ; admitted, 5; discharged, 5; remaining, B—o males and 2 females.—Charitable aid: Widows left destitute receiving aid, 3 ; orphans, 24 ; infirm with age and destitute, (i; sick relief, 1 ; boys' rCohimuramaru, 4 ; girls' St. Mary's, Ponsonby, 2. Distribution of charitable aid.—Hamilton : Mrs Heyes, widow, 7 children, 3 rations daily ; W. Mylrea, infirm, 1 rati-.n daily; H. P. McPherson, sick relief, 5s weekly.—Cambridge : James Doghcrty, infirm, 2s fid weekly ; Thomas Btitlor, infirm, 2s lid weekly; Mrs Harper, infirm, 2s Gd weekly.—Ngaruawahia : Mrs Kilfoylc, wijow, 2 children, 5s weekly; James terrier, infirm, 5s weekly ; Richard McGrane, infirm, 5s weekly.—Rangiriri : Mrs Gray, widow, !) children, 8s weekly.—Raglan : Mrs Paris, infirm, 2s (id weekly; Himiona (native), infirm, 2s (id weekly.— Finance : The present state of the finance is as follows :—To bank, credit balance, £G'J!> ils Gd ; suteidics due by Government, £07!) Is lOd ; contributions to be collected by Government, £3 5s 7d ; £1 for £1 subsidy thereon, £3 5s 7d ; contributions due by Piako County, £387; Waipa County, £320 14s; Raglan County, £08 18s 2d; Cambridge Borough. £38 14s 10J ; Hamilton Borough, £00 7s 4d ; £1 for £1 subsidy, £881 14s 4d ; hospital fees receivable, about £70 ; total, £318S 11s 2d ; accounts to be paid as per schedule, £273 Ils Sd ; balance, £2014 19s Gd. The windmill for supplying the Hospital with water has been completed and is woiking satisfactorily, the well has also been deepened and both it and the windmill fenced as authorised by tho Bonrd. Cost of windmill as per contract, £2S; lengthening both pumps, £3 10s ; deepening well, £113s ; fencing well, £3 17s ; collecting with kitchen tank, £2 2s; total, £39 2s. The fencing at the Hospital has also been completed at a total cost of £20 cSs Id less £5 10s 10d due by Mr Graham for half cost of boundary fence, the Board being liable for £20 17s 3J. A new cooking range has been fitted up at a cost of £14 19s (id and the old chimney pulled down and rebuilt at a cost cf £11. Paymknts.—The following accounts were

Hospital Extension.—The whole matter of hospital extension, fever ward, old men's refuge, and necessary furniture was left in the hands of the House Committee, architect and doctor to report at next meeting. Refuge.—Mr McDonald moved that the secretary be instructed to communicate with the members of the district, requesting them to see that the £150 promised by Minister for Public Works for an Old Men's Refuge be put on the estimates.— Seconded by Mr Brunskill and carriet], Rkliek. —The grants for Charitable aid were authorised to be continued during this month as last. Ventilation. —Mr McDonald moved that immediate steps be taken to have ventilators placed in the rooms at the Hospital. Seconded by Mr Hunter.—Mr Brunskill moved an amendment tiiat the matter be left in the hands of the House Committee. —Seconded by Mr Sodaon.— On being put to the meeting the amendment was declared carried.

Trees.—The House Committee was empowered to have some trees planted round the Hospital grounds.
