The Customs returns for die past spiprter amount to £324,007, an increase of £11,500 over the Colonial Treasurer's estimate. The increase, however, can be accounted for by the effect of the new tariff on goods already in the colony which have been taken out of bond since the introduction of the Customs Duties Bill, and on imports which were already on the sea that have since entered the colony. If the amount collected in the first quarter of the current year is to he accepted as an average, then the total revenue for the year will be under £1,300,000, or deficient in almost the exact sum the new tariff is supposed by it authors to yield. There is a deficiency on the Treasurer's estimate in the beer duty of over £300.
