MODIFICATION OF RACE BY EMIGRATION.

Americans descended from English parentage without admixture with any other nationality are not English. Their mental character and physique have changed, as have their acceut and language. The Mexican is not a Spaniard, however pure his decent. Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders take on a distinctive character of their own, because of changed climate. The Pennsylvania Dutch have lost their likeness to Hessians, as the Boers have lost theirs to a great extent to the Hollanders. After some generations a different language grows up even when an immigrant colony does not mix with natives of other climes. Even the Jews must submit to the modifying law of country, and climate, and time. Old colonies of Jews in Cluna and Algiers have little likeness to the Jews of England and Germany. Italians by thousands are pouring into South America, but a century hence they will have in feature and language little resemblance to the

Italians of Italy. Thus new nations are constantly being born, unlike any others that have existed. There never before was a nation like this in habits of thought, physical or mental traits. The German-Americans must become something better than the people from whom they descended —possibly better than the people among whom they sought a home, but different, certainly, No one is wise enough to predict the character of the

nationalities that will inhabit this continent two centuries hence. They may be, probably will be, such as will look back upon this age as we look back upon the Middle Ages, or think of the people of the nineteenth century as we think of those of the days of Alfred the Great.— Harper's.
