RETRENCHMENT.

At a public meeting held in Auckland on Monday to discuss the advisability of reducing the Government estimates for the year, the following resolutions wore carried : That while duly appreciating the reduction of Government expenditure already made, this meeting is of opinion that a very much larger reduction, say, £200,000, can and ought to be made, and so avoid the necessity for any large increased taxation." "That in order to facilitate economical administration the present cumbrous system of government should be modified to suit the taxpaying power of the country." " That copies of the resolutions adopted by this meeting be forwarded to the Government and the Auckland members, with an earnest request that their best efforts will be used to secure the results they indicate." Mr G. M. Reed's motion, "That, in consideration of the fiui>ncial position of the colony, and the necessity for further retrenchment, tho school «ge l:e raised to seven years, and free education should end with the fourth standard," was postponed for further consideration. The Star's Wellington Reporter has ascertained the opinion of the Auckland mem burs on the Education question, and they are almost unanimously opposed to any change. The matter here has assumed the nature of a duel between the Herald and .Star, the former strongly supporting retrenchment in tho Department, and receiving a lartju amount of support.
