PROPOSED FENCOURT ROAD
TO TUB KDITOR, Sir,—ln your report of the meeting of the Cambridge Highway Board, held on Saturday last, it ia stated that a resolution re a road near t'encourt, passed by the Board at a previous meeting, was rescinded. By an expression of opinion of ratepayers at the last annual meeting, it was thought advisable that the Board undertake no new work this year, but strike a lower rate, and simply keep the existing roads in repair. This was strongly advocated by one ratepayer who had signed the petition for the proposed new work. Now I ask, Mr Editor, if it is just in the present state of the country that the district should go to such a great expense, simply for the benefit of three or four settlers (who will gain very little from what I understand by the opening of the road), as they have a good road for all ordinary purposes. The new one is simply to save a few minutes to the factory. I also hear that many who signed the petition for the opening of it, had they had any idea of the expense likely to be incurred, would never have signed it.—l am, &c, Haotal'it. Hautapu, June ISth, 1888.
