CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Tuesday evening, at 7 p.m. Present: The Mayor, and Councillors Clements, Webber, Fergusson, Bond, Bach, D. and J. R. S. Richardson.
The minutes of the previous monthly meeting and of a, special*one held on May 18th, were road and confirmed. The.following is a synopsis of the:business arising out of the correspondent The Audit.—The Clerk reported that he had taken the Borough books to Auckland, and that Mr L. A. Durrieu, (the inspector, had audited them, and had forwarded the balance-sheet to, the Auditor-General to be eigned, but that it had not yet bean returned,; The Mayor said the Council should have held a special meeting on the,fourth Tuesday in May, for the purpose of signing the balance-sheet and the report; but could not do so in consequence of it not being to hand. He supposed they would have to call a meeting when it arrived. The Hospital.—-In the absence of the Mayor the clerk ! had, written to .Dr Kenny, requesting him to admit Thorifiaa Wilkinsouto the hospital. A reply had been received from the Secretary, stating they had no spare bed, and further stating that accident case's always take precedence. The Mayor said Wilkinson went to Hamilton, but had to return.
.A.' I '.Vacated House.— Mr G-. W. ;JR.nssell notified the Council that lie had vacated Mr.Cruikshank's hduse in Queenstreet, and requested that his name might ba from the rateroll in respect to it.— Mayor Said there were four ways in which names could be erased from the roll, but lie did not think any of them touched the present case, He thought it Would be well to keep Mr Russell's name on it, or they might perhaps have some difficulty in recovering. He moved that the request be declined, which was seconded by Cr. Clements and carried.
The Public Hall.—A telegram had been received from Mr H. Staples, Napier, asking the lowest price for the Public Hall for a week or ' month,\with option of renewal. - The Mayor said he had learned that it was wanted for rinking purposes.—Resolved that he be offered the hall at ]o3 per night for four nights in each week, the hall to be closed at 10 p m. The County Accounts—The Mayor said there was another communication from " the irrepressible Captain McPherson" enclosing an account for legal expenses in connection with the Waikato and Auckland Hospital Boards, for £1 17s 10d. They had agreed to share the legal expenses with the Waipa County and not- wjlth Waikato.—Proposed -by Cr. D. Richardson, seconded 'by Cr. Bond, that the account be returned,-to the Waikato Council, and their attention be called to the award of the AuditorGeneral which had settled all claims. Carried. Furze on the Streets.—Cr.=, Bach and J. R. S/Richardson having inspected the streets submitted a list of nearly 100 names of personsiwho occupied property that had ' furze "growing on the roads adjoining it. After considerable discussion it was resolved that 100 notices be printed,; and be served to the occupiers, to clear the footpaths of it. —Cr. D. Richardson.said he should like it to be clearly understood that this matter would be followed up with everyone ; so that people could not say they made fish of one and flesh of another.
The Works Committee.—The only work of any importance recommended by the Works Committee, was the filling in of a hole iu William-street, for which tenders had been invited returnable that day. When opened they proved "as follows: W. Spong, £4 7s 6d; J. Corcoran, £1 18s; H. Preece. £1 17s ; D. Hickey, £1 15s; J. McCornish, £1 17s 6d ; W. S. Young, J. Hicks and D. Stewart £2 each. Hickey's tender was accepted. Road Forming.—Cr. Webber suggested that the small portion of Greystreet still unformed be done. It would only co3t £3 10s, and would be of great service to farmers and others going to the mill, as Moon's hill would soon be impassable if the weather was ; wet.—Cr.. D. Richardson strongly opposed the spending of any money, that was not absolutely necessary to keep the roads that had already been-formed state of repair, in'the present state'of' the finances. They had a big overdraft,. and thq . interest was eating them up. A very lively discussion ensued, which ended in a proposition to do the work being carried by 6 votes to i. Finance.—The overdraft: and liabilities to date is £739 6s lOd. The limit of the overdraft is £762.;
IJew Rate..—A pte of Is in. the £ was struck, payable ift ! one suni on August Ist.—Cr. Clements and, Ferguson were appointed to- sign the new rate roll in conjunction:with the Mayor. - . , The Licensing 1 ' Clerk.—The Mayor brought up the question of salary to the clerk of the Licensing Committee, but when it was stated that .he was appointed by the Government, and received 15s per day travelling expenses each, tinjQ he cariie to Cambridge,' tlie majority of the council refused to votei him a salary, and the matter dropped. Dog Tax Defaulters.—The Mayor asked what, they should do? with' those who refused to pay for dog collars. He said the case they had taken before the K.M. proved a failure, as the individual had only been, fined ss, whicli was really a premium for breaking the law. It was resolved that before taking' further proceedings, the Clerk write to the authorities in Auckland and ascertain under what. Act they destroy stray dogs.
: The Surfaceman.—'The present surfaceman's contract expiring on the £Bth instaut, it was resolved to fix the rate of wage at os per day, and invite ,applications for the office ; which' will be considered at the next sitting of the Council. Improvements. — Cr. Webber was authorised to get the poplars on the Duke-street hill lopped ; and have some of the cuttings planted in the Thornton road where there is a land slip. It was resolved to repair Riley's hill; the work to be let by tender, with the forming of Grey-street. Accounts.—The following aecounts were passed for payment: —W. 1 Bartlet, £(i 15s ; D. Stewart, £1 16s ; J. Meredith, £24 <J3 9d; J. Ferguson, £7 4s 2d ; F. AY. Biicldand, £1 12s ; P. Murphy, £1 10s ; trustees of Lewis and Simpson, 12s lid ; J. S. Bond, 12s 6d ; J. Houghton and Son's, 8s 9d; J. Bates, 7s lOd; G, Dickenson, 15s. This was all the business - -
