Tub second reading of the Customs and Excise Bill was carried on Tuesday night in a very unexpected manner. Mr Macgregor, member for Akaroa, was to have resumed fche debate on the Tariff, but at the moment he was about to be called upon by the Speaker, he stepped out.iutQ, the. lobby. The Speaker, finding the honourable member was not in his place, and no other gentleman rising to speak, put the motion, which was carried by 53 to 29. This was a surprise to many members who had intended prolonging the debate, and who were assembled outside the Chamber. Mr J. B. Whyte voted with the Woes and Major Jackson with the Ayes. Sir George Grey was amongst the majority who favour increasing the taxation of the people.
