The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE. Equal and exact justice to all men. Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political. SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 1888.

Although New Zealand is labouring under groat domestic difficulties at the present moment, and has encountered a deal of hostile criticism from certain financial circles in England, it is manifest that there is 110 lack of confidence in the im nenso resources of the colony, and in its future progress, amongst the general body of investors in the Old Country. Our cable news brings us the gratifying intelligence that the floating of the loan of .£2,500,000, authorised by the Loan Act passed in the session now being held in Wellington, has. proved an unqualified success The whole amount tendered reached the large sum of over eight millions, or more than three times the sum asked for. The average price of the tenders is unexpectedly high, being <£99 15s 7d, or nearly par. It will be seen that the action of the Government in expediting the passage of the Loan Bill owing to the favourable state of the uioney market, has been fully justified. Moreover it is clear that the sincerity of the colony to retrace its past career of extravagance and econo-

mise, is treated with confidence by the British creditor, and that the contents of the Colonial Treasurer's Budget have afforded satisfaction at Home. The success of the Loan will very much strengthen the hands of the Atkinson Government.
