[BY TELKORAI'H —FIIKSS ASSOCIATION.') WEDNESDA\. Hon. Ate Dignan presented a petition from the I'apakura, fruit-grower?, objecting to the Codlin Moth Bill. Hon. Mr Wuterliouse moved that in absence of positive information upon the subject, the Council is not prepared to sanction the proposed deviation in the South Island Midland Railway Contract. Sir 'Whitinoro moved an amendment that the whole matter be referred to a select committee, and this was accepted by Mr Waterhouse. Sir F. Whitaker objected. Tho House divided : Ayes, lfl ; noes, i. The committee were then elected by ballot. Hon. Mr Barnieoat continued the debate on the abolition of Education Boards and raising the school age, speaking against the motion. Hon. Mr Swanson fallowed, objecting strongly to the school ago being raised. The Speaker allowed tho motion to be divided, with tho result that the raising of iichool age was favoured by 13 to 7, and the abolition of Education Boards rejected by 11 to !>. The Council adjourned at F5.5.
