[l)Y TELEGRAPH—OWN OORUESI'ONDENT. J Auckland, Wednesday. A man named John Symthe, for smuggling cigars from the steamer Ashleigh Brook, was fined £10 and costs, or 21 days' imprisonment. The barque Sophia Lubn, belonging to the Union S.S. Company, went ashore oil the North Spit at Kaipara Heads yesterday morning. All hands were saved. Telegrams from the Thames throw discredit on the reported find at Tararu, The stuff was examined by experts and shows no gold.
The Star's special reporter states that it is probable Mr Mitchelson will retire in consequence of the abolition of tlifi Public Works Department. , A number of parents were to-day fined for neglecting to seud their children to school in terms of the Education Act,
At a meeting of justices to-day, which was numerously attended, a resolution deprecating the retirement of Mr Baddley, assistant 8.M., was carried.
Sir William Fox was in the chair at the Licensing Court, City East, today. All the licenses were renewed except that of Patrick Lynch, of the Greyhound Hotel.
A dwelling house at the North Shore, owned by Mr Bailey, and occupied by Mrs Murdoch, was burned down at 2 p.m. to-day.
