|By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright.] Sydney, June 5. McGregor, the forger, has been sentenced to seven years hard labour. The question of establishing an ammunition factory in Sydney, which several local and English capitalists are prepared to do, is engaging the attention of the Government. The Finance Committee of the City Council have resolved to recommend the Council to ask the Government to introduce a Bill empowering the Council to borrow £1,704,0.00 for the purpose of paving the streets with wood, and a similar sum with which to purchase properties for the improvement aud widening of the streets.
During a heavy gale the barque Berbice, from Melbourne, went ashore outside Newcastle harbour early in the morning, and became a total wreck, but the crew were rescued by the rocket brigade. Bhisban'e, June 6. Abraham Street, a confidential clerk in the employ of Messrs Burnett and Co., a well-known drapery firm, who was arrested for embezzlement, has been sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. Flis defalcations amounted to £10,000, and he has almost ruined his late employers. _____^______
