Our telegrams inform us that a crisis is penning iu Wellingtgn on the fiscal policy of the Government. It is stated that the Free-Traders, who form il considerable section of the ministerial party, threaten to withdraw their support from Sir Harry Atkinson, as they are unable to regard with favour the protective character of his proposed tariff, We are further told that the Premier will lesign in the course of next week, if ho finds he has not a majority at his back, and that his policy is opposed by his party. The rest of the Ministerial party, however, feel confident that there would be no chance of a direct "Want-of-Con-fideuce motion being' passed, as not oven the I' 1 roe Traders would support it. A series of important resolutions has beon proposed by Mr Ormond, the member for Napier, by which the whole of the financial policy of the Government will bo thoroughly debated before the tariff itself is discussed. The purport of Mr Ormond's action is to avoid as much as possible the recourse to extra taxation to such an extent as is intended by the Colonial Treasurer, Mr Ormond does not wish to act in a hostile spirit to the Government, and the Premier lias accepted the proposed resolutions in a friendly manner and not as a No-confidence motion, in which light some of the Opposition profess to regard it. It is very desirable that the diiliculties of the colony should be calmly and dispassiouately discussed by the House, and every assistance given to the Government to carry on the services of the country without adding to the burdens of the people ruore than is found necessary. It would be a great misfortune if another change of Government took place in the present embarrassed state of affairs, and would merely tend to intensify our troubles.
