THE CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH BYLAWS.

TO THE KDITI)]', Sir, —I should like to ask " the authorities that be," how it is that the by-law affecting shooting within the Cambridge Borough boundary is not carried out. Are the inhabitants to consider the whole by-laws inoperative, and that the Council merely made them for. pastime ; or was it to let the rest of New Zealand know that our little hamlet—many think very unfortunately—had been proclaimed a Borough ? A considerable sum of money has been spent upon beautifying and adorning onr lake Te Koutu, and, thanks to the exertions of the indefatigable chairman of the Domain Board, itTs now becoming a "thing of beauty" to which the number of wild fowl that stay upon it through the day, greatly add. No shooting whatever is allowed on the lake reserve, but if people are allowed to station themselves just outside it, and "pop" at the ducks as they leave for their feeding grounds in the evening, as has been the case lately, they will soon cease to visit the lake, and it will be sliorn of one of its attractions. I think this is a ease in which the bylaws should be put in motion. I am sorry to say Cambridge now possesses four professiohal "pot hunters," who scour the country far and near, and render a decent day's shooting very difficult to find ; so I trust the authorities will endeavour to keep a little game within the borough, and thus preserve its being exterminated.—l am, &c., yours respectfully, Vox Populi. Cambridge, May 21st, 1888.
