Tawiiiao has written to the Native Minister accepting the proposals made to him to settle him and his people on lands to be allotted for their occupation, except the condition that ho should subscribe to the oath of allegance to the Queen. It is not the intention of the Government to press this, as there are several prominent chiefs who made war upon us that are now in receipt of pensions without having made the oath. Public sympathy is on Tawhiao's side, and it would be a very gratifying thing to see him and his followers settled for life where they can make themselves more comfortable than they are at present.
