[By Electric Telegraph —Copvriuht.'l Melbourne, May 20. Ciias. Birkitam, who attempted to murder his wife, from whom he had beeu separated since Christmas, has been committed for trial. Accused admitted that he had fireil the shot 3 in a fit of jealousy. At a largely-attended meeting to-day of those interested in the soft goods trade, resolutions protesting against any increase in the tariff were carried, as it was considered that such increase would be detrimental to commerce. Melbourne, May 21. Already 250 exhibits received from New Zealand, have been placed in the space alotted to that colony. Melbourne, May 21. A youth named Win, O'Brien has been sentenced to death for robbing and wounding a rate collector. Sydney, May 20. The directors of the Broken Hills Marototo Goldmining Company intend to return the whole of the moneys submitted for shares in the company. They liavs also determined to prosecute the strictest enquiries with a view to aseettaining the origin of the attempted fraud. Sydney, May 21. John Tait, the well-known sporting gentleman, dropped dead to-day. Brisbane, May 21. The elections as yet not complete give a majority against the Government, and it is expected that to-morrow the Premier will place his resignation in hands of the Governor.
