MIXED MARRIAGES.

The question of mixed marriage.?, and of the ruliirion in which the children should be brought up, has always been one which has caused great trouble. Some years ago :i gentleman, equally known for his staunch Protestantism and his devotion to the Turf, married a Roman Catholic lady of fortune, and made the condition, which was agreed to, that all tho children should be brought up in the Protestant faith. Several children were barn, and tho compact was honestly adhered to ; but in the course of time the husband, who continued his devotion to tho Turf, experienced such heavy losses that ho was unable to meet them, and applied to his wife for assistance out of her separate fortune She agreed to advance the sum required on condition that he .should allow her to convert the eldest of the five children from a Protestant to a Catholic, and to this condition, with much grief, lie was constrained to agree, consoling himself with the remembrance that ho had btill four Protestant children left. But at tho very next meeting further losses ensued, a further application to his wifo became necessary, and he was once more obliged to sell one of his children. This went on until at a race meeting not long ago, when everything was going wrong for tho gentleman, he was heard to pay, "The favourite's beat —tho favourite's beat—Good God, I shan't have one d d littlo Protestant left."—(Vanity Fair.)
