HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Council Chambers at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, There was present a full council, consisting of His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. J. W. Baiton), and Crs. Knox, Sandes, Salmon, Wood, Misseu, Bell, von Stunner, Coates and Jones. Mr 1 , . G. Saudes, borough engineer, was also in attendance.
Bukoess' Roll.—The Clerk having read the burgess' roll for the present year, tbe Mayor asked if there were any objections, and thore being none, he then moved that the roll be verified, and that Crs. Jones and Knox be authorised to eign the roll.—Seconded by Cr. Jones and carried.
Lkask.— H. A. Cowper applied for the lease of section 407, Hamilton East, for a term of years.—Cr. von Stunner moved that a committee, consisting of Crs. Knox, Jones and Sandes, inspect the section, and report at next meeting.— Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried. Subsidy.— The Secretary to the Treasury wrote stating that subsidy to the amount of £76 12s 7d had been remitted to the credit of tha borough. Local Option Poll,—The Presiding Officer reported that as requested he had taken this poll, which had resulted in favour of an increase in every instance.
Public Libraries Act.—The Returning Officer reported that in accordance with the Public Libraries Act, 1869, he had taken a poll, and as the majority of ratepayers had voted for the adoption of the Act, ■he declared it carried into force, but a protest had been entered, that through a mistake in the advertisement, which read 1879 instead of 1809, the poll was illegal.—The Mayor moved that the poll re adoption of the Public Libraries Act, 1869, be taken again in accordance with that Act—Seconded by Cr. Knox and carried.
Baths.— J. G. Pannell, lessee of the West bath, forwarded a statement of accounts in connection with the bath for the past season, aud asked for a reduction in the rent agreed upon, as owing to an unfavourable season, the attendance had been very small.—Cr. Knox moved that the sum of £8 be taken as payment in full for the rent of the bath last season. —Seconded by the Mayor.—Cr. Bell moved as an amendment that the sum of £10 as agreed upon with the lessee be charged, but this lapsed for want of a seconder, and the original motion was put and carried, Cr. Bell alone dissenting. Sales.—Messrs A. Buckland and Co. applied for the borough saleyards to hold a mixed cattle sale on the 31st iuet.—The application was granted. Solicitor.—Mr W. McGregor Hay wrote, asking whether he was still retained as solicitor to the Council. —The Clerk was instructed to inform Mr Hay that he was still retained.
Podndkkeper's Report.—The poundkeeper reported that during the month 24 head of cattle had been impounded and six dogs registered, the fees collected amouuting to £5 5i 2«i. He suggested that Bradley's paddock should be closed for some time, in order to give the grass a chance to come ou again, and that the cattle at present in it be put into the park reserve.—Cr. Knox moved that tho report be adopted, and that Bradley's paddock be closed till the 30th of September next. —Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried.
Salisyards.—Cr. Jones moved that Crs. Knox, Coates and the mover, in conjunction with the engineer, be appointed a committee to arrange matters with regard to the saleyards, and report to the Council at their earliest convenience.— Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried. — Cr. Von Stunner's namo was added to the committee for drawing up rules and regulations re saleyards. Works.—The report of works done during the month was read and adopted. Kerbing.—Cr. Coates called the attention of the Council to the fact that the timber, kauri and rimu, which the Borough workmen were putting in for kerbing would not stand the weather.
Payments. —The following accounts were passed for payment:—Ranger, £2 12s 7d ; Tippen 8s ; Pannell, 7s ; Sandes 10s Id ; Waite, JE3 8s 6d ; Maunder, £3 17s ltl; Kelly, £4 12s ; Tucker, 3s 6d ; Peacock, 10s 8d ; T. Vincent, £1 4s; The Waikato Times, £11 14s 6d; Taylor, 15s 10d; Vincent, £2 ISs; Fawkes and Foxall, £25 ; Slade, £19 14s 7d ; Wright, £39 4s Sd. Fencing.—The Mayor, in accordance with notice given, moved that the Council fence in the pieee of ground at the back of the saleyards to be used in conjunction therewith. —Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried.
Valuer.—The valuer applied that a further sum be granted to him for work done in conjunction with the valuation, —The Mayor gave notice for next meeting to move that the sum of £.5 be granted to the valuer for his services.
Lamps.—Cr. Coates, with a view to retrenchment, gave notice to move at next meeting that four lamps in Hamilton East and three on Hamilton West be done away with.—Cr. Knox gave notice to move at next meeting that three lamps be erected iu Hamilton East, viz. one each at Cassidy'a corner, comer of Cambridge road and Galloway-street and Catholic Church, and one in Hamilton West at the Wesleyan Church.—Cr. von Stunner palled the attention of the Council to the dangerous position of the lamp at the railway gate.
Kent.—Cr. Salmon gave notice to move at next meeting that the sum of £3 7s 9d be charged to the Hospital Board for rent of office.
