The Victorian Government have determined to establish a small arms factory, with (lie assistance of South Australia and Tasmania. Brisbane, May 12. The shop of a jeweller named Edcnter at Maryborough has: been broken into by burglars, and £200 worth of jewellery stolen. : ■ : ~ > Newcastle, May 12. At the Police Court yesterday an expolico'.nan named Porter was charged with having attempted to murder his wife. It appears that the accused had been keeping company with a woman, and had deserted his wife. The latter followed him from Adelaide, when Porter persuaded her to accompany him*" to Sydney, and while there attempted , to administer prussic acid' to her; oh; sweetmeats. He was not successful in inducing her to take the poison, when he threw her down, and attempted'to force the contents of a vial down her throat. In the struggle the contents of the vial were spilt, and. the prisoner was subsequently arrested.
