The Imperial Defence Bill, which has just been circulated, provides for the ratification of the agreement decided at the Colonial Conference between the Colonial Governments and the Imperial Government concerning Australasian naval defences. The authorities intend expending the sum of £80,000 in building and arming a squadron for Australian waters, the colonies repaying the auiouno at the end of twelve years, with 3 per, cent, interest. The Bill provides also for expending tho sum of £2,000,000 for the defence' of ports and coaling stations, the interest on which will be payable out of the Suez Canal dividend's.
Mr J. Dillon, M.P. for Mayo, has beensenteiicedto six months' imprisonment, with hard labour, on a charge of having advocated the " Plan of Campaign," in addressing a meeting at Jjundalk, County Louth. Mr Dillon gave notice of appeal. Cabul, May 11. Severe fighting has taken place on the Afghan frontier between the Ameer's troops and the rebels. The Ameer restrained the Aharashed tribe from seeking Russian protection, and General Alikhanoff hus been despatched to assist the Aharasheds. The Ameer's troops have severely defeated the tribe who revolted in favour of Russia. The tribe was located between Penjdeh and Herat. Rio de Janeiro,- May 11L The Chamber of Deputies have passed resolutions in favour.of the immediate and unconditional abolition of slavery in Brazil. ";, St. PetEiWbdrg, May 11. ; Tho Novosti states that England's war-like intentions are evidently intended to enable her to'take part in a struggle should it arise, and are evidence that she continues to pursue manifestly an aggressive policy.
