complexion, was found dead under the verandah of the) Harbour Board's shed at Dampier's Bay, Lyttelton. His handkerchief was marked "J. Morton," but he has not been identified. In reference to a csblo message, stating that 'Bishop Kennion has declined the See of Christciiureh, it is announced that, tho bishopric lui3 not been offered to him. THAMES, Monday. A fire occurred at l'uriii last night. A haystack, containing 70 tons, was destroyed ; it was the property of Mr Peter Maxwell, and was insured for £150 iu the Victoria oHiee. GISBORNK, Monday. At a meeting of the locil shareholders of the South Pacific Petroleum Company, on Saturday evening, it was resolved to await Mr Weaver's return from California, before mak ing a test of the oil supply. Mr Fleming, of Sydney, managing director, was present, and stated he was fully assured of tho great value of the property, after having visited the well. WELLINGTON, Monday. An exhibition of Capt. Alman's patent life raft took plant; to-day, before a good number of persons. The raft is considered by nautical men highly satisfactory. The Secretary of the Post-office advises that the E.M.S. Zealandia, with English mails to date 21st April, left San Francisco for Auckland on sth iust., two days bite, and that the R.M.S. Alameda, with the colonial mails to 23rd April, arrived at 'Frisco from Auckland on the liJtli iust., one day early.
