At a public meeting held in Auckland the other day, presided over by the Mayor, it was resolved to petition Parliament to take into consideration the desirability of repealing the Propertytax. The committee appoiuted for the purpose have forwarded U3 a copy of the petition in order that those residing in this district, who may be in favour of the movement, can append their names to it. The petition sets forth that, in the opinion of the petitioners, "The Pro-perty-tax, in the piesent financial state of tho colony, is inequitable and oppressive, and that its abolition is desirable." One of the most objectionable features of the tax is that it saps the enterprise and energy of the people in possession of capital, large and small, and as a direct consequence puts a barrier to to the steady employment of labour, thus acting injuriously on the industrial classes. The petition lies at our office, and can be signed by all who are desirous of doing so, whether actual payers of Property-tax or not.
