INTENSE GOLD IN EUROPE.

Tiik weather is a daily topic of interest throughout Europe. London for many days prior to the Ist March was covered with snow. While the parka are fresh and white with it, the Btreets are black and " sloshy." The tremendous traffic of the metropolis soon tramples and crushes any thing but a long and steady downpour. In the country distriets of Eng-

land railway traffio has been impeded, several persons have been lost in the snow, and cattle have been cat off from help. Ia Derbyshire tho snow in some places is from six to ten feet deep. The lovely dales of this picturesquo country are blocked with snow and ice. Steeplechases in various parts of the country have been postponed from day to day. The Waterloo Cap meeting at Liverpool has been postponed for the third or fourth time. In Switzerland and Northern Italy vast avalanches have shut up lines of traffio by road and rail ; villages have been buried, and much loss of life is reported. Travellers overland to join tho Australian and other outward bound vessels nre delayed in London in consequence of the obstructions on the Mount Cennis Tunnel. Serious news comes from Madrid. In the province of Oveido railway bridges and villages have been crushed and eleven lives lost. On the Ist March in London, glimpses of brilliant and welcome sunshine have accompanied the snowy outlook, and the intensity of the cold has much abated. It seems paradoxical to say that tho Hkating championship race has had to bo postponed ; but the falls of snow interfere with skating. The champion, Mr George Smart, holds the belt, and receives a salary from tho Skating Association ; so the championship is more or less unique, Tho English champion's brother went

over to Holland recently, and won tho international Skating Race at Amsterdam. " Smart by name and Smart by nature," are the Smart family. There are several of them, it is said, quite equal to James, aud largo bets are made that the English championship is not allowed Lo go out of the family.
