POLITICAL NOTES.
| BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday THE ADDIi KSS IN-REPLY. Contrary to lons established precedent the debate on the Address-in-Reply to-night occupied only about one hour and a quarter ; it was also probably the lirst time on record in the New Zealand Parliament that no other member rose to speak except the mover and seconder of the address. When the House resumed at half-past seven, there were full galleries, as Mr Fyke was expected to make the " Speech of his life." If this were so, his hearers were considerably disappointed, as the speech was by no means up to his usual standard. He said that Swedeuborg has it that in heaven the angels always gvmv younger; therefore he considered that, as he was the oldest angel in the House, he must l«e the youngest member. Mr Carroll, in seconding the address, made an exceedingly i»ood speech, which left a very favourable impression on the House. It was fully oxpected that somo member of the Opposition would rise to speak, especially as Mr Hutchison appeared to be taking notes of Mr Carroll's remarks, but to everybody's astonishment the .Speaker put the question without any move being made.
