The past winter has been remarkable for the number and destructive character of the avalanches which have fallen in Switzerland and the Tyrol. In the Lower Engadine as many as fourteen have descended in three days, win re such a phenomenon was previously unknown. In the Grrisous seven men were buried alive, and two of them perished. At Ravctseh two brothers have lost their lives by a similar calamity. At the village of Cnmasine, in the Treutino, 10 houses have been overwhelmed by an avuianchil, and niye persons have been killed. At Pinzolo three houses have been destroyed, two persons killed, and two others seriously wounded. At Sparone, in the valley of the Oreo, Piedmont, no less than 30 persons have perished from a like cause. At Armaz, near Aosta, 13 persons have been buried alive beneath an avalanche, and a similar catastrophe at Settiina led to tho of three houses. Five corpses have since been recovered from them, while a yoniif,' sirl has been rescued alive. For two days all traiVic was suspended in the streets of Turin owing to a heavy fall of snow, and railway communication was also put a stop to from the same cause. Yes I It is certainly true.
