THE LOCAL OPTION POLL.
TO THE KDITOK. Sir,—That publican's licenses may be increased. 1L; that they may not be increased, 3 ; and this is the voting in Hamilton, the chief town in WaiUato, and possessed of resident ministers of nearly every denomination, who from their several pulpits declare loudly against drillU and its attendant evils, denouncing it. and with truth, as the greatest curse of modern times. Fat when the time arrives that by united action among themselves they could keep in chock, if not suppress, this social evil, why do they stand idly by, evidently regarding the matter as on;; not concern, ing themselves, or coming within the scope of their duties and responsibilities? Can anything more clearly show that the denunciation by modern ministers of religion of drink and other evils are mere words—empty words—and can it bo wondered that their churches arc empty and their influence waning?—! am, &0., WIIATAWHATA.
