Spurge.on's charges of heresy in the Baptist Church, a motion was carried by the Baptist Union that it was inexpedient to provide further theological tests of membership, inasmuch as the Union was already possessed of sufficient power to deal with anti-evangelical sentiment. The resolution was seconded by Mr James Spurgeon, brotherofOharles, and carried by a large majority. It is believed that now the strife in the churches will be ended.
Mr Pender has been banquetted, Lord Derby presiding on the ocuasion. Mr Gladstone has given notice that he will oppose the extra duty on wine when Mr Goschen's proposals aro considered in committee. A superb collection of pictures has been obtained for display at the Melbourne Exhibition, and it is said to be the finest collection of English art ever despatched abroad. Mr Gladstone supported the Bill, assorting that Irishmen were quite capable of discharging all civil duties rendered necessary under the Act. Rome, April 25. The Italian Government' intend concentrating all their navy in the Mediterranean.
