ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

Te Awamutu. The quarterly meeting of the committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Walton (chairman), Mandeno, Roche and Teasdale. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The visiting committee presented their report which was highly favourable. The Chairman stated there was a balance of £5 5s in haud. Your committee v.sited the school from time to time during the past year, and were satisfied that it was well conducted. The number of children is yearly increasing, at the present lime there are 92 ou the roll. The Inspector reported after the last annual examination, that everything was satisfactory, the tone and discipline being good. The only change in the teaching staff, has been the appointment of Miss Crookes, in place of Miss Carley, who was removed to the Te Rahu school in October last. .By the exercise of very strict economy, your committee have been able to pay all out goings, and to contribute £7 15s, half cost of painting all the school buildings. The school picnic was held on 27th January last in Mr White's grounds, and the cost' was, as usual, contributed by the parents and friends, and in the evening the Rev. Cambridge. The following is the report of the outgoing committee presented to the meeting on Monday night The Committee have pleasure iu reporting that the attendance of the school during the past year has kept up very well, the average for twelve mouths being 20979 maximum attendance 244. The number ou the school roll avera"ed 297. The annual examination for Standards was held by Mr Inspector O'Sullivan iu November, with the satisfactory result that out of the total number presented viz., 269, there are only two cases of failure. Mr O'Sullivan reported that the school was " vury well taught indeed." Mr Inspector Goodwin inspected the school in February this year, and has sent in a very satisfactory report on the general management and teaching of the school. The Committee regret to have to report that notwithstanding every effort made to the contrary, the District High School was closed at the end of last quarter by the Board, in consequence of the decreased attendance caused doubtless by the greatly depressed state of things in the Waikato. At the same time the Committee think that the district is justly eutitled to a portion of the grants for secondary education, instead of the whole being spent in Auckland. The annual athletic sports in connection with the bchool were held in November, and were as successful as in previous years.
