The .Roumanian newspapers arc demanding the expulsion from the country of M. Hitrovo, the Russian Ambassador. Lord Ivnutsford, Secretary of State for the Colonies, lias written to the New South Wales Government to the effect that the proposal of the latter to exclude the immigration of Chinese into Austra] lian territory for the period of twenty years presents serious difficulties. A Spalding team of baseball players leave Chicago for Australia about the middle of October. Iu the House of Commons to-day the Local Government Bill passed through its second readiug on the voices. The compensation clauses, providing for compensating publicans whose licenses were refused, were freely debated. Seveu of the counties in Ontario have, by a large majority, decided against the renewal of local option with regard to licensing matters. The centenary of La Perouse will be celebrated iu Paris. It is expected that the New South Wales loan will be over-subscribcd at 103. Jem Smith, the pugilist, has acct\s«fed the challenge to light Peter Jackson at Sydney for £1000. An explosion in the collieries at Work - ingham, Cumberland, resulted in the death of seveu miners.
