ESCAPE OF WOLVES IN LONDON,
AuouT twelve o'clock on the night of February 11th, great commotion was caused at Sanger's Theatre, in the Westminster bridge road, through the report being made that a pack of wolves had escaped from thaircage at the rear of the building. The performance at the house had terminated, and everything appeared safe, when the fireman on duty hoard
great howling and noises in the direction of the stables, which wore occupied by a cage containing eight Russian wolves and a number of performing horses. It was then discovered that by some means the wolves, which had only arrived on Satur
day morning, had escaped from their cage, and were attacking a valuable mare
nown as the Shrewsbury mare, which
they finally killed. There being a larjre number of hoesea in the stable at the
time, efforts were made to secure their safety, and this was effectually, but with great difficulty, accomplished, the approaches to the stable being also made fast to prevent the wolves from causing further damage. In an interview with a correspondent on Monday morning, Mr Sanger said he believed the wolves were let loose in his stables on Saturday, by
the malicious act of some evil-disposed person. On Saturday his manager had occasion to discharge two grooms. These men were seen about the theatre just
•evious to the escape of the -wolves, and
it would be easy for a man to get on the top of tho cage and lift the bars. The wolves were seenred oi) Monday afternoon
in a new iron cage, On the tamer and his assistants appearing tho wolves growled ferociously, and at length one of the largest flew at thorn, Ho was reoeived with a heavy blow from the tamer's stick, and retired sullenly to the darkest corner. After this no attack was made by the savage brutes, but it was not until after prolonged and careful efforts that they were at length driven into the cage.
