CLEVER SWINDLES.
A kkries of clever swindles has been perpntratedjon the Saving Bank of New South Wales by means of bogus deposits and false entries in pass books. Norm,in Campbell, a young American, employed as a clerk in the bank, was a party to this swindle, in which the chief operator was a friend of his named Morris Marks, alias Lamont, a clerk, aged 29, and a native of Victoria. Marks opened an account in the bank with a small deposit, and when lie wished to obtain money he got Campbell to place his initials to an entry of a deposit sufficiently large for the purpose. Next day he would go to the bank and withdraw the money. This method of robbing the bank was carried on until between £600 and £900 had been withdrawn, when some little hitch in the arrangements of the swindlers attracted suspicion to Campbell, who was captured by the batik and locked in an upstairs room pending tho arrival of the police. Campbell, however, managed to get out of the window, lower himself to the ground by the water-pipe'and escape. He succeeded in evading capture for some time, but was eventually pounced upon so quickly that his efforts to use a loaded revolver, which he was known to carry for the purpose of resisting arrest were foiled. Campbell and Marks were both charged with frauds at the Police Court and remanded.
