MINING.
The Poom at Te Aroha. [OWN cnitltKSl'OXnEN'T. I Tk Ahoha, Monday. Mu W. R. Wilson's Nicw Purchase.— No time has born Ir.st by Mr W. R. Wilson in making arrangements for poshing on the works fur tho development of the mining property just acquired by him at Waiorongninsii. Acting on his behalf Mr H. H. Adams, who retains the position of general manager which he held under the late Battery Co., commenced operations with a number of men this (Monday) morning. In addition to those now started other works on an extensive scale have been planned, for which many more hands will be required. The hill is likely to become once more a scene of life and activity, and under the energetic sway of the new proprietor full employment will be found for the surplus mining population at Waiorongnmai among whom fears were, until recently, entertained of a hard time during the coming winter. Thk Tut. —There is further good news to hand from the Tin mines. In the low level that has been put in at the Champion lode claims, excellent silver bearing stone was struck on Saturday. This find has been made at a depth much helow anything discovered in the older workings, and goes far to prove that the reefs in that neighbourhood continue to yield payable ore tn an indefinite depth. In the Ruakaka claim adjoining the Champion, another largo lode has been discovered equal in richness to the one opened up about a month ago. This claim bids fair to prove one of the most valuable mining properties in tho district. Mr E. Cameron has despatched by rail to Auckland for shipment to Adelaide, five tons of ore from the Maybell claim, Tui. It will be treated at the works of the Australian Smelting Co., in which Mr W. R. Wilson is a large shareholder. A big return is expected from this parcpl, as some of the ore is of groat richness. Some time ago Mr Cameron sent five tons to be treated at the Freiburg works, in Germany. The result has not yet been received, but it will probably arrive by the next mail from Europe. A correspondent from Te Aroha wr'<-e* t- J say that the purchase of the valuable mining property at Waiorongomai has created a great stir in the district, and that everybody is hopeful of better times than Te Aroha has ever seen yet. There has been quite a rush for town allotments at Waiorougomai, which has already given that quiet township an air of improvement. All the availablo labour there has been engaged by Mr A lams on five contracts, and we Hear that 100 more men are wanted. Operations were commenced yesterday. Four new tunnels are to be opened, and a large water-race about one milo long is to be made. Waitoa. We are informed that Mr Sinden has erected a plant for Mr J. B. Smith, on his 1000-acro block, about two miles from the Christchureh Company's works, and on tho ".lank of tho river. Both Messrs Smith and Sinden are sanguine that tho machine will extract tho f,old in payable quantities. The plant is small, and only cost £40, and will treat about five tons of stuff per day, at a cost of 6s par ton. They commenced operations on Saturday last; therefore, in a week or two we will probably hear what sncccss has been met with. Marototo. The assay in Sydney of a quantity of stuff from the Marototo, which was forwarded by the s.s. Mararoa gives the following results li tons assayed by W. F. Roberts, yielded at the rate of 307<>zs. 12dwt. 22grs. silver and -llozs. 3dwt. Igrs. of gold per ton. Picked samples from the same sample gave at the rate of 30fi2ozs. lOdwt. 3gr. silver, and 12-tozs. Odwt. 22grs. gold per ton.
