Lord Roscbory's motion for a committee to report as to the necessary reforms in the House of Lords has been negatived by 47. In the course of a speech on the motion, Lord Salisbury said he could not support so shadowy a proposal, though he was quite willing to consider a properly-constructed Bill on the subject. It is' expected that the boat race between Cambridge aud Oxford Universities wilt iu a closer finish than is generally anticipated. Oxford, against which odds are freely laid, is now rising in public favour. The Temperance party iu the House of Commons, which includes members of both sides of the House, are exhibiting antagonism to the Government in consequence of the postponement of the Licensing Bill. DnBLIN, March 18. A serious faction fight occurred at Longford, County Longford, on Saturday. Iu repressing the fight the police were compelled to fire into the mob with buck shot, and three persons were seriously injured. Plymouth, March 20. The R.M.s. Tongariro arrived last evening from New Zealand, all well. Her cargo of frozen meat is in excellent condition. New York, March 18. A terrible railway accident occurred at Black-street. A passenger train was crossing a trestle bridge, when the structure collapsed, precipitating the train into the gulch beneath. Twenty-five of the passeugers were killed outright, and 35 are seriously injured. Reports of the American wheat crop continue unfavourable, the backward state of the crop being due to the prolonged inclemency of the weather. Paris, March 19. After three days' crucial experiments on rabbits and sheep, M. Pasteur is convinced that his scheme will eradicate the rabbit pest in Australia in the course of a year or two. Ottawa, March IS. The Methodist Revival Mission in Canada is meeting with great success, and at a service held in this city Sir John Macdonald, Premier, and his wife announced themselves as converts.
