Tin; appeal of Adams, who was recently lined by the magistrate for promoting racing consultations, has been dismissed, the Judges upholding the decision of the lower Court. Shnrea in the Broke* Hill Silver Mining Company have again gone up to £400, at which figure they are now quoted here and in Adelaide. In Melbourne they are £3!)2. The local press condemns the action of the Government in forcing the police to prosecute persons selline; newspapers on Sundays, and declares that the sale of tramway and railway tickets must now, under the recent judgemcut of the Court, be stopped. Adelaide, March 10. Rubies have been found in the Broken Hill district, two pounds weight of stones having been picked up a short time ago near Poolamacoa. Rough tests have been made and have proved satisfactory, but the colour of the stones is not so deep as those found by McDonnell. Owing to the large exodus of farmers from here to Victoria, the Government had been urged to advertise that suitable districts in the south-eastern portion of the colony and elsewhere arc still open to agriculturists. Some of the 4|idence taken by the Land Commissioners who were requested to make enquiries into the position of the farmers, shows that privations of a most pitiable character have been undergone. Mr Deakin has received a communication from the Royal Society, enclosing a resolution passed at the annual meeting, advising the Australian Governments to refuse to allow the introduction of a disease for the destruction of rabbits. Great complaints are made here of the serious delays that take place, in cable messages at the Adelaide office. The Government, after long consultation, have resolved to oiler colonial firms the manufacture of fifty locomotives at £3000. This is above the English price, and below the lowest tender. The offer is said not to bft looked upon with favour, the margin being considered insufficient in view of the rise in copper, tin, and steel, and the possibility of a further rise in the event of war.
