MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.

(BY TELKUtt.U'H.—OWN COIUIHSPON'DKNT.) Auckland, Monday. Late on Saturday afternoon and evening a whisper got about town that Mr Gabriel Hedley (Secretary of the Devonport Ferry Company) was missing, and had not been seen since the day previous, and many were the surmises made as to his whereabouts, and it is now an open question whether he has got accidentally drowned or left for parts unknown. His books have been examined and found perfectly straight, so that there is no cause of a financial nature for his departure, and as he and his wife were known to be greatly attached to each other speculation is at a loss for a cause, and it is feared that Mr Hedley lias been drowned. The harbour has been dragged without success, and this is the position how matters are at present. The last time Mr Hedley was seen was at 9 p.m. on Friday night, when he was then seen by Mr Edward Coleman, solicitor, on the wharf. It has transpired that the missing man had tea in town, with a view to working late at his office. Mrs Hedley stated her belief that her husband had gone to Fiji, giving her reason that she had seen him in company with a gentleman from the islands. She stated among other things that Mr Hedley has taken with him a violin which he prizes very greatly.
