REDUCTION WORKS AT THE THAMES.
Mil J. CiiAMiJEiis, of Auckland, lias sent the following letter to the Thames Harbour Board :—" For some time past I have been trying to induce English capitalists to establish reduction works in this part of the colony, and have had considerable success, so much so that a leading metallurgist is now on the way out to see what we can offer as inducements. Nearly everything has been arranged except the selection of the site, and of these several are for selection, but the one I most approve of is in the Thames disriet, and comes under the con trol of your Board. Your Board can assist very mater'ally, anil at the same time help youi district, therefore I would propose that special indae.-ments be offered to help such an object. As the establishment of such works would mean an increase of shipping to your port, bringing fuel and ores of all kinds. I would suggest that your IV.aid remit a wharfage iln s for say li>e \ea>s u:■on :< ores, &0., actually ns.'d by the prnpns.-d works, and only oalt dues be uharg- d >-■'■ say 21 years. The above is merely thrown out as a suggestion, as it may be beyond the powers granted to Harbour Board, and if such is the case I shall b;pleased to receive any proposal from your Board that may in any way help me to establish such works, and be the means of starting works that will buy ores of almost all kinds and in any quantities, believing that the system will be the means of doing more good to our coldfields than anything else."—The Board promised every assistance.
