GIVE MORE MANURE TO SOIL.

Puoi'Essoß Wir.LiAM.soN, of Owens College, Manchester, addressing a meeting of agriculturalists at Malton, Yorkshire, recently, aaid that one of the greatest evils connected with unprofitable farming at the present day was the limited manuring given to the soil. Farmers had an idea" that to put in just what they thought the plant would take up was Bufiicie;it, but science had proved this to be a great mistake. They should put four times the quantity into the soil, for the more they used the more the plant would try to take up, and not one halfpennyworth would be wasted. This extra manuring was the secret of the great success of the Lothian farmers above all others. They had heard great complaints lately of the unhealthy state of British agriculture, but why did not our farmers do something instead of grumbling ? There weio sending annually eight millions of money over to Holland for eggs, cheese and butter, all of which ought to be supplied by our own farmers, who had as good facilities for production as foreigners. The professor said that agriculturalists generally ran too much in old ruts, and he urged the further development of scientific education.—N.B. Agriculturalist.
