SCANDALOUS ABUSE OF OFFICE.
£40,000 SQUANDERED. The Herald on-respondent telegraphs from Wellington :—Tlio public will scar- i culv believe the statement when told that the travelling expenses chared by Ministers and Government officials for tho twelve months eliding the 30th of September last amounted to the large sum of £10,000. I hesitated to accept the figures as correct when I saw them stated in a journal understood to be friendly to the late Stout-Voge!_ Government, who must benr the responsibility of this large expenditure. I took especial pains to inquire as to the correctness of the statement, and the answer I got from an authoritative source was that the figures are correct. The above is surely bad i enough, but worse remains behind, It is [ further stated that in several instances prominent officials have gone about the colony travelling upon various pretences, having no official work to do worth speaking of, but really " increasing their salaries by drawing large sums for travelling allowances." Any comment upon this would simply destroy the significance of it.
