NEW ZEALAND'S BIRTHDAY.
(BY TKUOUIi.U'II.— I'HKSS ASSOCIATION*.) Wellington, Moiul ii y. Tjik 48111 Anniversary of the colony of Now Zealand, took place yesterday, but the celebration therewith was held today. Beautiful weather was experienced, the heat being tempered with a light southerly wind. Holiday seekers had numerous attractions including the Island Bay Races, the Druids' Fete, and Animal Regatta, besides these numerous excursions were arranged to all parts of the harbour and country. The Salvation Army luid a large attendance at their picnic, and the newspaper runners wcie taken for a day's outing at Plimmerton, the proprietors of the local Kvening Journal defraying the cost. The Druids' Fete was attended by about 4000 persons ; the principal event (the Druid's Handicap), consisting of four distances, with prize money amounting to £42, was won by Kenward, of Auckland, with nine points. Lockie, Wellington, was second with six points, and Keddell, Wellington, was third with live points. A protest has been entered against Kenward, on the grounds that his nomination did not comply with conditions as to previous performances. The mile race was won by I'ulleu, Palmer 2, and Smith 3. Time, 4min. 51secs. *i he Regatta did not attract a very large attendance. A first-class yacht race was won by ZarifFa, which came in third, but won on time allowance. Island Bay Races. Thkre was a fairly good attendance at the Island Bay Races, The following are the results :— Local Handicap, ot 40sovs. 1J miles. Voltigeur 1 The Shall 2 ... ... ... 3 Seven started. Marlborough 1 Scrub 2 Russloy 3 A capital finish between first and second horses. Won by half a length. Maidkn' Handicap Race, losovs. Won easily by Spear.
