PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the 1 iako County Council was held at the Pbojnix Hotel, Morriusville, at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. There were present, Mr \V. C. Chepinell (in the chair), and Crs. Heaney, Mills, Murphy, Gould. Williams, Dibble and Brunskill. Correspondence.—The Secretary to the Treasury wrote, stating that it was the intention of the Government to cease payment of rates on all Native and Crown Lands after 31st March, 1S8«.-T1ib Property Tax Commissioner wrote, notifying the Council that as the £821 2s (id, being r>% of subsidy estimated to bo due on rates collected for ltioti-7, hart involved an overpayment of £1% Kis M, the latter sum would be deducted from the subsidy payable for the present year.—The Secretary of Mines wrote in reference to the authority for the transfer of tho balance of £72 11s 3d of the £103 11s 2d for tracks from Fern Spur to Butler's Spur, and track to claims at the Buck Reef, to be expended on the construction of Stoney Creek track, and stating that, in view of retrenchment, it is found necessary to cancel the authority for the expenditure of the £72 lls 3d.—The Clink was instructed to write, to the Secretary for Mines, to the effect that as the work .was completed they would expect the balance to be paid. The Secretary for Mines also wrote informing the Council that tho ■ subsidy of £00 for the construction of a track from the Hot Springs, T« Aroha, to thVPiii-Wuirongniuai track would have to be cancelled. Maria Taylor wrote re state of the road in Groystroot, To Aroha, in consequence of the bad state of which vehicles could not get up to her house, and foot passengers would lie unable to do so were, it not for the bridge built by her husband. As she had been'paying rates for some time and no improvements had been made to this street she asked that it be made passable. Letter received. Mr F. D. Rich of the Patetere Land Company wrote, opposing tho levying of an extra rate of \d in the £ in the Patetere Hiding, as almost the whole of the rate would be paid by the Company, and as they had kept the road &c. in repair in the past they were urepared to do so in the future if the old rate of Ad in the £ were continued. The Secretary of the Waikato Hospital Board wrote, asking for a return of the rateable value of alfthe rateable land in the county. SLAUGHTER HOU.SK LICENSES.—Mr F. Marshall's application fora slaughter license was granted subject to his complying with the slaughter house Act, and the county bylaws. Renewals of slaughtering licenses were granted to D. Sherriti, T. Liowe, F. Dibble, W. Hurray, and (haves and Co. Doc; Registrar.— The Clerk pointed out that under the Act there were no such persons as sub-registrars, and alsa, that the office ot the registrar must bo uotitied in advertisement. The following registrars for dogs in the county were appointed :— Messrs G. Wattam, Taotaoroa ; K. Pasce, Paeroa; A. Bre.umer, Piako ; F. Pavitt, To Aroha.; J. Simpson, Matamata. The fee for this year was fixed at 2s (id for sheep and cattle dogs and 10s for all other kinds. Notice Of Motion , .—ln accordance with notices of motion given At last meeting, Cr. Murphy moved " That in future the meetings of the Council be held at Te Aroha."— Seconded by Cr. Heaney.—Oh the division of the. Council, the voting being equal, the motion was lost on the casting vote of the Chairman.—Cr. Brunskill moved that the Council frame and adout standing orders for the proper conducting of the business of the Council.—Seconded by Cr. Heaney and carried.—Cr. Heaney moved that the standing orders of the Waikato District and Charitable Aid Board, with some slight alterations and excisions, be adopted.—Seconded by Cr. Brunskill and carrim].—Cr. Mills mover'that the Council subaidisc thu proposed Prospecting Company at Te Aroha in the manner provided for in the Mining Act, viz., to the extent of from Is 6'd to os per fooD for every foot of tunnel driven for prospecting purposes.—Seconded by Cr. Murphy.—Mr Heany moved as an amendment' that the matter be deferred until the Company was floated.— Seconded by Mr Dibble and carried.— In regard to Mr Monroe's application for aid to the Waiorongomai Prospecting Association, it was resolved on tho motion of Cr Gould, seconded by the Chairman that no aid be given. Trie' Chairman moved that a rate of M in tho £. in the Waitoa, Taotaoron, and Matamata ridings, and Jd in the £. in the Te Aroha and Patetere ridings, be struck.—Seconded by Cr Murphy and carried. . Roads inPateteue Hiding.—Tins matter having been deferred from last meeting, was now brought up for discussion, and Cr Heaney moved that i of the rates of the Patetere riding bo expended in that riding. -Seconded by the Chairman and carried. Oxford-Cam hiudge Road.—Cr Williams drew the attention of the Council to the bad state of this road in several places, and on the motion of tho Chairman it was resolved thaCCrs Williams and Heaney be authorised to get the>;pairs meutioned.bv Cr Williams as necessary to the roads done. Cr Brunskill moved in leference to the continuation of the "road through tho Taotaoroa riding, that half of the rate of a -Jd in the &. levied to-day mi the Taotaoroa riding be set apart for works in this riding,—Seconded by Cr Murphy and lost. Gordon Settlement Road. — Cr. Murphy moved that £40 bo expended on this road viz., £30 for making approaches to bridges on Native Reserve, and £10 for filling in ths gully on Mr Roche's property. Seconded by Cr. Mills. The motion was I,,st - . -tu Clark's Diiatn.—ln accordance with a resolution passed at last meeting the following report was drawn up on this subject by the engineer. . Engineer's Report.—The Chairman Piako County Council: Sir,—l have the honour to report on the possibility of taking the water from the creek near Mr JVlaclty's ajong the road side drain instead of through Mr Clark's land that this can be done by deepening the outfall through Mr Blenc'oo's leasehold, and widening the same to four feet, and deepening and widening the above named road drain, the total distance being about 30 chains. If the county decide to do this work it will be necessary to fix a plank, crossing over the road drain, 90 that Mr Macky can get to his section from the County Road. The cost of the whole work will be £10. The; cosi of fixing flumina or pijuw through Mr CliirU's land would he AJSO. Mr Ble.iicoe u quite willing to have thu above outfall widened and deepened, as it would dnvin a cnnsidprable portion of the low ground on his and the neighbouring sections.
