THE DOMAIN BOARD AND THE LAKE.
to run EIUTOIt. Sin,—The roar fur retrenchment litis evidently nut vet penetrated the ears of the 11.D.8. ; like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ears, the majority or its members refuse r/.heur the voice of the charmer. By your Tuesday's issue I see that the Board's gross income' is t'ls7, with a liability of £1)0, for interest on a £1000 loan, and an overdraft of £381, the interest on this overdraft is probably '.) qer cent, or £31 Us 'id, but take it tit only (i per cent, and we have £230* The outgoings fir interest are thus about £113 in round numbers, leaving £40 as the net income. Out of this handsome income the Board now intends spending £10 in building a jetty on the lake for the convenience of "the swimming races, bathers, etc. Considering the fiasco made by the Council over the river batljs. I should have thought the Board had had enough of providing conveniences for bathers, and as the members of both bodies are the same, it should have been a case of "once bitten twice shy." Kanov anyone trudging up to the lake to enjoy'a plunge in its liquid mud, while the river is running clear as crystal past everybody's door, or thrusts itself on their notice every time tnsy go abroad. Judging from past experiences, in all probability this jetty will require a caretaker, or will gradually disappear into that region where the ghosts, of so many projects unbaptised by common sense, wander with feeble waitings over their too early death. Finally, sir, allow mn to ask if this new fad of the boss of the D.B. is to be erected on private property. -I am, yours Anti-Muddlb. Hamilton West, January 18th ISSS. TO TIIK EDITOR. Sir,—lt is unfortunate that at the public meeting on swimming races a few more did not roll up and carry them for the river, as I am given to understand by people who know the lake that it is far too muddy to be suitable, not to speak of its distance. Another reason is thought that it may be to the interest of a few to bring the lake prominently before the public, still they cannot make it popular. It has been tried before to establish a rowing club there, which resulted in an ignominous failure. Why did the Domain Board not come forward then and help the rowing club with funds? What use will this jetty on which the Board are about to spend £10 be to the L'eneral public: for the next twelve mouths? Why don't they build a steamer there while thev arc about'it: Nobody will object, as everybody knows, as things are at present constituted objections' are useless. Let them go the whole hog or none. Why trine with a mere bagatelle like a £10 jetty or a £(i W.C.—Yours etc., 81t.1.Y. ■Te Awam.utn, 17th January 18SS,
